Totoro: Originally, Satsuki mistakes what Mei says and thinks she said Troll instead of Totoro. Trolls are known as Grimm Reapers or Peace Bringers, even Child abductors. Some say that Totoro is only visible by children, but the contradiction is that Kanta, Satsuki’s classmate can not see Totoro. Since Totoro is like a Grimm Reaper, people who are close to their death are able to see Totoro. Which means that at the point where Satsuki and Mei were able to see Totoro, they were already close to their deaths.

The Sandal: The Sandal that fell into the lake was indeed Mei’s and she had died of drowning at that point. But Satsuki, not wanting to admit it, refuses to acknowledge it and runs off. She then goes to Totoro and pleads that she wants to go and see Mei, that she is all alone and crying. This is when Satsuki decides to kill herself to see her sister.

The quotes like: “Look the trees are moving away” and “The people can’t see me” refers to her going through the trees, as a spirit and can not be seen by the other people.

Mei’s Shadow:When you see Mei reappear in the movie after she is missing, she loses her shadow for the rest of the movie. She is a ghost, so it is only logical.

The last Hospital Scene: When Mei and Satsuki go and give the Corn to their mother, why did they not directly show up and give it to her? And why where their parents unable to see them when they were sitting on a tree directly across the window? They were already dead, and could not show up. The father was unable to notice, but their mother was able to feel them smiling at them. This was possible because their mother was also close to their death.
